Logline
Shrouded in the clandestine danger of the French Resistance, the poetic hero CYRANO falls for the dynamic Roxane, but as a little person, he fears her rejection and helps the handsome Christian woo her instead.
Synopsis
It is the spring of 1944 in Nazi-occupied Paris. Resistance fighter Cyrano de Bergerac is hopelessly in love with Roxane, a fellow Resistance member and poet coder. As a little person, Cyrano feels unworthy of her love and fears her rejection more than any foe.
Christian, a new member of Cyrano’s squad has also fallen for Roxane though they have never met. He brings his friend, Louis, to an underground theatre after curfew to learn her name. Coincidentally, Louis introduces Christian to Cyrano’s friends, Le Bret, Bernard, Edmond, and Remi who are waiting for Cyrano to show up. Louis quickly abandons Christian to party elsewhere. Christian is told stories about Cyrano’s bravery and bravado before discovering a pickpocket trying to steal from him. Christian threatens him and the pickpocket tells him of the Gestapo’s plan to kill Louis. Christian leaves to warn Louis.
Cyrano then appears as the play opens and he heckles the actor, Montfleury, to get off the stage as he has forbidden him to play for a month. The play is canceled as Montfleury makes his escape. As the disgruntled audience departs, Cyrano gets into a fight with Valvert, known to collaborate with Nazis. A crowd, including Roxane and her sister, Danielle, gathers to watch. When Cyrano shoots a pistol out of Valvert’s hands, the noise draws the attention of the Nazis enforcing a strict curfew and the crowd scatters.
This is an unabashed love story that plays it straight and allows us into the tortured heart and brilliant intellect of its unconventional lead. – The Black List
Cyrano, with the help of his friend, Le Bret, escapes through the streets of Paris to Cyrano’s apartment. On the way, Cyrano confesses to Le Bret that he hates Montfleury because he ogles Roxane while he’s on stage, revealing to Le Bret that he’s in love with Roxane. Le Bret encourages him to tell Roxane how he feels and Cyrano gets frank about the realities of his height and why he will never reveal his love.
Just as they reach the safety of Cyrano’s apartment there is a knock at the door. It’s Roxane, and Danielle. Cyrano is worried they overheard his confession of love. They are quickly interrupted by Edmond and Bernard who support a drunken Louis who needs Cyrano’s help. Roxane makes plans to meet Cyrano at Remi’s Bakery the next morning to discuss what she needs from him and leaves to aid Louis.
Louis needs to leave Paris through the Underground but his brother, who lives with him, is at his apartment. Cyrano concocts a plan to single-handedly destroy two Gestapo squads who are waiting for Louis to get home while the rest of the team extracts Louis’ brother.
As planned, Cyrano meets Roxane at Remi’s Bakery, he is ready to confess his love when she tells him she is in love… with Christian. She found out that he is joining Cyrano’s group of Resistors and is asking for his protection against the hazing that they do to new members. Cyrano agrees and she asks him to ask Christian to write to her. Roxane leaves Cyrano broken hearted but he is quickly drawn away by his friends and the captain of his group to retell the story of how he saved Louis.
Le Bret, Captain Clovis, Bernard, and Edmond beg Cyrano to tell his story to the rest of their group but Cyrano is in no mood to openly admit to his victory of the night before even though the people are revived by the defeat of so many Nazis and the now available meat… De Guiche reveals that he is the one who turned Louis into the Nazis…
The love triangle between Cyrano, Roxanne, and Christian is bittersweet and elegant. Cyrano and Roxanne’s chemistry is heart-aching, because we can see Roxanne as Cyrano does and hear the weight of his words. Christian is not portrayed as an ignorant antagonist, but rather a man genuinely in love and noble himself. – The Black List
The Resistance group retreats to their underground training facility where Cyrano can no longer put off giving them a full briefing. In the midst of retelling he is constantly interrupted and insulted for his height, or lack thereof, by the new member, Christian. Cyrano tolerates it for the sake of Roxane but eventually gets fed up and has the rest of the men leave the room so he can “deal” with Christian. Once alone Cyrano admits that, as Roxane’s oldest friend, he knows her feelings for Christian. Initially he is excited by the news however, once he hears that Roxane is expecting a letter from him he panics. He views himself as a simple soldier while Roxane’s mastery of language, poetry and love of the theatre makes him feel inadequate to respond. Cyrano then offers to write to Roxane for Christian. They form an agreement to woo Roxane as a team, Christian’s body and Cyrano’s soul.
Roxane is preparing a speech for The French Union for Women’s Suffrage when there is a knock at the door. It’s Cyrano, Le Bret, and Remi. Remi is crying, her husband has been shot for hiding a map of Germany and instructions on how to escape in a loaf of bread bound for a POW camp. They are interrupted by De Guiche who needs Roxane to code a message for him. The message confirms that Cyrano’s group of Resistors is leaving to prepare for the D-Day landing but De Guiche suggests he and Roxane leave via the Underground. Roxane is shocked and De Guiche leaves. Roxane rejoins the group and asks Cyrano to tell Christian to come say goodbye.
Cyrano wants to prep Christian for their meeting but Christian wants Roxane to love him for who he is and declines. After fumbling through seduction and goodbyes with Roxane, Christian begs Cyrano for his help. Through the dim light and cover of a tree, Cyrano disguises his voice as Christian’s, and is able to tell Roxane how he feels. They succeed in winning her back and Christian climbs a tree to Roxane’s balcony and they kiss. Christian and Roxane quickly marry just as De Guiche returns, now broken-hearted. The men leave on their mission and Roxane asks Cyrano to make sure Christian writes to her often.
Cyrano, as Christian, pours his heart into every daily letter to Roxane. It has been weeks, there are no rations left, and they have returned to Paris but are in hiding. Cyrano sneaks out every morning to deliver a letter to Roxane, as he does this day when he gets caught by the Nazis. De Guiche arrives to tell the team of Resistors that Cyrano has been caught but they are not to rescue him. De Guiche has given away their location as a diversion for the Nazis while other teams aid the French police in taking back the city.
Le Bret, Christian, Edmond and Bernard disobey orders and go to free Cyrano. After an impressively easy extraction of Cyrano, Christian confronts Cyrano about his motivation for taking such a risk to deliver letters to Roxane. Cyrano hands Christian the final letter, Christian discovers a tear stain and Cyrano soon admits that he too loves Roxane. Christian encourages him to tell Roxane… when he is shot. Cyrano and the other men grab Christian and retreat to their team’s barricade just as Roxane, Danielle, and Remi show up because a letter never arrived that morning.
Christian and Roxane say their final goodbyes as he dies. Roxane, with Cyrano by her side, finds the final letter. She speaks of how his words and his soul are what she loved not the way he looked. But Cyrano, feeling as though he caused Christian’s death, can’t tell her the truth about the letters. They are forced to return to the fight just as De Guiche returns with reinforcements.
Five years later, Roxane lives in an orphanage and is getting ready to go out when a child comes in to tell her that her sister is there. The child remarks that she will miss Cyrano’s visit this evening and Roxane tells her that she is going to see Cyrano’s play and that she’ll tell her all about it when she returns.
At the play, old friends have come to see Cyrano, he has become successful and they are happy for him. Cyrano is surprised to see Roxane has come to see his newest play and Roxane admits that it is because this one is a romance and her heart is ever a romantic one. An actor forgets his lines and Cyrano has to whisper them to him. Roxane recognizes the voice as the one from the night Christian was under the tree professing his love to her. She quickly realizes that it was Cyrano the whole time and leaves the theatre. Seeing Roxane exit, Cyrano follows. She is buying him flowers and begs him to forgive her for not seeing it sooner. She demands he tell her the truth and when he confesses she tells him she loves him. They kiss. The end.
